Skate Sizing

Let's get the size right! So please request a personalised sizing guide before purchase, but do mention which skates you are interested in when asking for one of our guides.

US/UK/Mondo Point/Euro (West)/Euro (East)/Aus Women's/US Women's? What about Canadian hockey skate sizes? Are you sure?

Our email: skate@rollerway.com.au

Email us first

No, it's not so that we can sell you something more expensive or farm your email to send you spam, but because we genuinely care and would rather interact with you to get the correct size so you (or the person you are buying them for) are happy. We would rather lose a sale than sell the wrong size - honestly!

You are in a hurry and want some general sizing information?

FootLengthMeasurementForSkates

The general relationship between sizes is as follows:

UK 1= US2 = Aus Women's 3 = US Women's 3.5 = (French) Euro 33

We also like correlating the sizes you normally wear with foot length & width, to try to get the best fit. To get the correct measurement, don't trace the foot on a piece of paper and measure the tracing! Measure the length from heel to toe, carefully. This is what a shoe-store gauge does, and this is the measurement we would like.

Why no specific guides on the site?

Why don't we just have the right guides on the website, one customer complained. There are many already on the internet right? Yes, and many are simply wrong or do not relate very well to particular skates. We would also end up with many, particularly as we sell roller skates, rollerblades, and ice skates, and cater for subsets within each discipline as well.

Measuring the foot

Measurement techniques vary amongst individuals with some measuring the foot-print compared to the foot length. Another customer said, "the difference couldn't be that much, could it?" How does two sizes sound! Remember that every size is about one centimetre, so it doesn't take much to be out.

Standard width?

Standard or D width is common overseas, in America and Europe, but less common in Aus. Limited availability of broad fittings with some models (unfortunately we are a niche market) means that sometime we need a bigger skate than our regular shoe size to accommodate the extra width. Some skates do come in E/EE widths but most do not.

How much growing room?

If you were buying kid's shoes you may allow a thumb's width, and we often use the same rule of thumb (2-3cm) with skates. However, a loss of performance may follow too much room and excessive room will become a safety issue. Girls' feet tend to stop growing in length at about the age of 12 and boys at about 14. Just because they are likely to get taller and broader doesn't mean that teenagers need a lot of growing room in their shoes or skates.

Perception

Try not to become fixated on a size. By all means highlight what shoe size has generally applied to you but do not blindly order a size 8 because you have always been a size 8, as on this occasion the skates you want may be a size 7 (for example).

Preference

There are some subjective issues which are hard to quantify and often vary depending on the intended use of the skates or the past preferences of the skater. Some people like their skates roomy and others snug. One persons "support" is another's "constraint" and some may describe their skates as "roomy" whilst others would refer to them as "sloppy."

But remember, the way the skates feel when they are new is not usually the way they feel when they are broken in, and your feet have become conditioned/tougher with regular use.

Size Management

It's amazing what you can do with two pairs of socks and an extra $2 in-sole from the local shoe maker! Some people even use compression socks to improve comfort and circulation.
